After the original Benji film had been a success in 1974, the popular puppy dog came back for another adventure in 1977’s For the Love of Benji. Benji’s director/trainer, Joe Camp, cast a new dog in the sequel, but Benji number two was identical in both looks and talent, and America continued to be hooked.
In this story, Benji’s on vacation in Greece with his new owners. During the trip, Benji becomes the pawn of Chandler Dietrich, a spy who hides a top secret message in Benji’s paw. In his effort to retrieve it, Dietrich follows Benji and his family around, waiting for the moment to grab it. When Benji gets lost and ends up alone in Athens, he has to escape Dietrich and keep his evil agents from capturing him, and get back to his beloved family.
Both this and the original Benji film combined wholesomeness and action in spades, and the sequel became another family classic. The Benji franchise continued to entertain audiences well into the ‘80’s.
