Release History:

1981 - Time Bandits
Former Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam’s bizarre 1981 fantasy film, Time Bandits, followed the adventures of Randall, Fidgit, Strutter, Og, Wally and Vermin, a group of little people that have been directed to fix some holes in the universe by their boss, the Supreme Being. But the group has other ideas. They decide to steal the Supreme Being’s map and do a little time-tripping robbery.

The first stop for our band of bandits is 1980s Britain. The group lands in the wardrobe of school-age Kevin. After the group of friends see the activities of Kevin’s parents – watching too many game shows and playing with too many gadgets – they ask Kevin to come with them.

Kevin and the little guys jump from time to time. They meet Napoleon – and steal from him. Then they meet Robin Hood – who steals right back from them. They also come face to face with King Agamemnon, who impresses Kevin as the father he would have liked to have. Meanwhile, the Supreme Being is after them and his map, as well as bad guy Evil, who wants to change the world into the image of technology (David Warner, who would also be the bad guy in Tron).

Kevin and his little friends sail on the Titanic before it sinks. An Ogre couple wants to make them into a fondue in the Time of Legends. They find themselves suspended over a timeless void while trapped in a cage. Eventually, the group ends up in Evil’s Fortress of Ultimate Darkness, where they rely on the help of the Supreme Being to get them out of their final jam.

Gilliam shot most of the movie with the camera only a few feet off the ground, trying to make the whole film from the perspective of a child. He said that the film deals with the inconsistencies of hero worship, and discovering that your heroes aren’t always what they seem. The movie left its audience with an unexpected ending to spark many a discussion.

The film combined this strong thematic content with a surreal look and quirky fun. The music and closing song were performed by fellow Brit George Harrison. It did respectively well at the box office, and remains a cult favorite for Gilliam fans and lovers of off-beat fantasy/comedy adventures.
