1974 - Benji
1977 - For the Love of Benji
1980 - Oh, Heavenly Dog
1987 - Benji the Hunted
After years of playing a bumbling news anchorman and skewering President Ford weekly on late-night television, Chevy Chase to fetch a film career. He would play a police detective in 1978’s Foul Play and two years later, man’s best friend - as a four-legged private investigator in Oh! Heavenly Dog.

Gumshoe Benjamin Browning is investigating a political sex scandal in London. When he gets a little to close to breaking the case, he is murdered and finds himself at the pearly gates. Deemed “marginal material” and not quite suited for either heaven or hell, the higher power decides to send him back to earth, as Benji, canine companion to magazine writer, Jackie Howard (yes, the same adorable mutt that America fell in love with in Benji and For the Love of Benji.) Being a pooch somewhat hinders Benjamin’s abilities as a private investigator. Even something as simple as dialing a phone presents a few problems when ones hands have been turned into paws. But Benji is determined to doggedly pursue his murderer and help take a bite out of crime.

As with all Benji films, director Joe Camp was at the helm of Oh! Heavenly Dog. Jane Seymour and Omar Shariff rounded out the supporting cast as well as Benjean, the daughter of famed dog thespian, Higgins (who had played Benji in the previous films.) While not much of a box office success, Oh! Heavenly Dog wouldn’t be the last glimpse of Benji. Another feature film, Benji, the Hunted would be released in 1987, as well as Benji: Off the Leash in 2004. There were also a few television specials and even the Saturday morning offering, Benji, Zax and the Alien Prince in 1983 – which lasted for a single season.
