Release History:
1986 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
He was the ultimate teen icon. He knew how to do it all – ditch school, get out of trouble, and keep his sanity during the tortures of the high school experience. He was Ferris Bueller, who could talk anyone into anything, and take advantage of any situation.
This 1986 film was another John Hughes teen film, in the tradition of Sixteen Candles and Some Kind of Wonderful. Ferris Bueller was more focused on comedy than romance, creating classic scenes such as the monotone Economics teacher (created by actor Ben Stein) who would dully call for "Bueller?...Bueller?" in a less than exciting educational experience.
Ferris decides that today is a great day to skip school, and invites – or rather, forces – his best friend Cameron to join him. The uptight Cameron has a perpetual grimace caused by his strict and unrealistic father. Ferris fakes being sick to his concerned parents, Tom and Katie, who take off for work and hope he feels better. He then takes off for Cameron’s only to convince him that the only way they can truly enjoy a day of hooky is in Cameron’s dad’s beloved 1961 Ferrari. The two of them connive the school to get Ferris’s girlfriend Sloan out for the day as well, with that old “dead grandmother” excuse. Together, the three of them take off for downtown Chicago.
The day off consists of visits to the Sears Tower, a German pride parade where Ferris rides on a float, the Art Institute, the Board of Trade, Wrigley Field, and a fancy lunch where Ferris gets in only by telling the maitre ‘d he’s Chi Town's "King of Sausages". All the while, school administrator Ed Rooney is off to prove that Ferris isn’t really sick, and Ferris’s cranky older sister has had just about enough of Ferris’s hijinks.
After all is done and enjoyed, everyone gets back home, a little better off for having broken the rules just a bit.
A short-lived TV spin-off called Ferris Bueller came out in 1990, which starred Jennifer Aniston playing Ferris’ perpetually-annoyed big sister.
