Rocky

Every sports movie made since 1976 is compared to Rocky, and for good reason. It set a standard for greatness. Talia Shire and Sly were nobodies. Burgess Meredith was the only real established name, and was more of a character actor than a star. The performances of all of them, as well as Carl Weathers, made them all stars.
Even though its often imitated and parodied, Rocky transcends the cliches of a feel good sports film, rathe than succumb to them.
The final climatic battle isn't about winning or losing... oits about GOING THE DISTANCE, which Rocky does. He loses(albiet in a disputed descion) to the champion of the world... but he goes the distance.
Its endurance, heart and yes, love that are shown to be virtues in Rocky, not just having the referee raise your hand.
