Release History:
1989 - UHF
If a movie was going to star Weird Al Yankovic, you knew it was going to be pretty nutty. And UHF was just that – chock full of parodies, jokes, and crazy characters that appealed to kids with a left of center sense of humor.
Yankovic stars as George Newman, an all-around loser with big dreams who gets fired from his latest job. When his Uncle Harvey wins a failing UHF TV station in a poker game, George’s big dreams find a place to come to fruition. He and his friend Bob create a brand new programming lineup with shows like Raul's Wild Kingdom and the kid’s show Uncle Nutsy's Clubhouse.
It isn’t until the crazy janitor Stanley Spadowski starts to host Uncle Nutsy that the station finally starts to see success. The show becomes a hit, and the rest of U-62’s lineup, including Wheel of Fish and Conan the Librarian become the most popular things on TV. But success breeds jealously and the local network, helmed by resident bad buy R.J. Fletcher, decides he’s going to buy out the little station and turn it into a parking lot. It’s up to George and his friends to raise enough money to buy the station themselves.
In true Weird Al fashion, the film contained a bunch of movie spoofs, including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rambo, and Gandhi. It had plenty of original jokes as well, including a famous scene of a kid getting hit in the face with water from a fire hose. The cast was full of up and coming TV talent - Fran "The Nanny" Drescher, Victoria Jackson of Saturday Night Live, Krofft show cast member Billy Barty, and Michael Richards, just months before his debut as Kramer on Seinfeld'.
UHF came out during a very busy summer movie season – Tim Burton’s Batman, the Ghostbusters sequel, the third Indiana Jones installment, and the hit Honey I Shrunk the Kids all came out within months of each other. Unable to compete with these big budget blockbusters, UHF quietly faded from view. It remains a cult favorite, however, both on video and what UHF would ultimately become – cable television.
