Release History:
Among the many screen versions of Cinderella, the Disney animated film from 1950 is the best-remembered. The picture marked Disney’s return to animated features after an eight-year hiatus, as well as to the fairy tale tradition – in this case, with a new adaptation of the classic French tale with a bevy of new creature characters.
Upon the remarriage of her widowed father, the good-hearted young Cinderella moves in with her Stepmother and two new Stepsisters. After her father’s death she is made into a household slave to her Stepmother and her Stepsisters, Anastasia and Drusilla. Friendless among humankind, the poor girl’s only companions are her animal friends – the dog, Bruno, a pair of mice named Gus and Jaq, and the bluebirds. Just as her stepfamily persecutes Cinderella, the Stepmother’s cat - naturally named Lucifer - menaces the mice and birds.
Meanwhile, across town, the King proclaims that he will host a grand ball so that his son, the Prince, can meet all the eligible young ladies he might marry. Cinderella should be as eligible as anyone, but it is only through the intervention of her Fairy Godmother that Cinderella has a chance to escape the dreary toil of home, where her wicked family has left her without any fancy clothes, and have a chance to go the ball and meet the Prince. With help from her animal pals, some magic, and a glass slipper, “happily ever after” might just be in the cards for Cinderella.
As expected from a Disney animated extravaganza, Cinderella featured several memorable songs. These included “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” “Cinderelly,” and “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” the last of which received an Oscar nomination. The movie represented a glorious comeback for Disney’s tradition of animated features. One of the year’s most popular features, it ushered in a new golden era for Disney animation, which was to continue in the next couple of years with Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.
