Release History:

1992 - D3: The Mighty Ducks

Iceland: where all the best baddies come from. Right?

Of course not. But that country got its moment in the (midnight?) sun of infamy in Disney’s 1994 sequel to its surprise hockey hit from two years earlier. With the vanishing of the Soviets as the convenient, default bad guys, D2: The Mighty Ducks brought in Iceland to provide the opponents for everyone’s favorite underducks.

Gordon Bombay, coach of the lovable Mighty Ducks, has hurt his knee trying to make a comeback in professional hockey. But Tibbles, a sportswear executive, comes to the rescue with an offer of a new coaching job, helming America’s entry into the Junior Goodwill Games. Bombay gathers the scattered Ducks and adds a rainbow coalition of new recruits: Julie, Luis, Dwayne, Portman, Ken, and last but not least, Russ, who’s from South Central LA.

After being pulled into the hype machine of commercial superstardom, Gordon and his squad are body-checked back to reality after getting battered by the black-uniformed Iceland team. They regroup, warm up with a big ol’ street hockey match on the pavement of Russ’s LA hood, and gear up for a rematch in the finals with the Nordic toughs.

Financially successful, the movie also gave Disney the ultimate cross-promotion mojo: it could show off the Mighty Ducks uniforms on its own, real NHL team, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. A third Mighty Ducks feature came out in 1996.
