Release History:

1990 - DuckTales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp

For a time in the late 80’s, the hottest thing in kids’ television was a show about a wealthy Scottish duck, his three scrappy little nephews, and an accident-prone pilot. The Ducktales gang had nowhere to go but up – onto the big screen, where the full-length feature Ducktales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp appeared in 1990.

Never mind that he’s already the world’s richest quacker, Scrooge McDuck wants to put some space between himself and his nearest rivals. So Scrooge sets out after the mythical treasure of Collie Baba, accompanied by Huey, Dewey, and Louie along with little Webbigail and the pilot, Launchpad McQuack. Our crew of waterbirds locates the treasure, but loses it to the wicked magician Merlock.

Escaping back to Duckburg with nothing but an old lamp, the disappointed Scrooge and company soon discover that the apparently worthless item actually houses a genie – the wish-granting kind, of course. Wacky fun ensues until Merlock turns up looking for his lamp, launching the ducks into a series of perilous adventures.

Disney produced the film under the label “Movietoons,” a new division intended to rekindle the zaniness of the studio’s early animated shorts. Though the film didn’t achieve success on the level of The Little Mermaid, it helped keep up the popularity of the TV series, which pressed on in the Disney Afternoon program block.
