Release History:
1985 - Explorers
The release of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial opened up opportunities for a slew of kid-oriented science fiction movies about beings from other planets. One of those movies was Explorers, directed by Joe Dante, whose previous film, Gremlins, had been produced by Spielberg. Explorers paid homage to the sci-fi classics of Dante’s youth, and he made ample reference to them through the movie.
The film marked the debuts of young actors Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix as Ben Crandall and Wolfgang Muller. When Ben has a weird dream, his computer geek buddy Wolfgang realizes it might be some sort of alien message. They join up with social misfit Darren Woods to build a spacecraft, based on a design from Ben’s dream.
Throughout their spaceship-building adventure, the boys have to deal with the normal pangs of growing up – school, bullies, and girls and constant distractions. But they don’t give up, and find, to their astonishment, that their spaceship actually flies. They take off for the stars, and make contact with a race of little green tentacles aliens with their own peculiar views about earth culture.
Unfortunately, Explorers was no match at the box office for The Goonies, and the film wasn’t considered a success. Joe Dante ended up re-editing the film and enjoying a more successful TV and video release.
