Release History:
1981 - The Fox and the Hound
Disney’s 24th animated feature, The Fox and the Hound, told the tale of an unusual friendship. With it’s somber theme, and story that was both heartwarming and heartbreaking, the movie was similar to Disney’s previous film, Bambi.
When Tod, a young fox, loses his mother to a hunter’s off screen gunshot, he’s taken in by Big Mama, a kind owl who sets the little fox up with human mom-type, Widow Tweed. It’s there that he meets a young bloodhound named Copper, and the two of them become best friends.
Copper is eventually taken away for the winter by the mean-hearted hunter Amos Slade, where he is trained to become a hunter as well. When Copper returns, his friendship with Tod is put to the test, as now Copper is obsessed with hunting and catching Tod and his new girlfriend, Vixey.
The Fox and the Hound still contained trademark Disney musical interludes and comic sidekicks, but featured lofty themes and a sober mood. Still, audiences were hooked, and the film was a success in both it’s initial run and it’s 1988 re-release.
