It’s bad enough when you’re a bad-attitude, misfit little boy, but what if you’re a bad-attitude, misfit killer whale? Talk about problems.
Willy, the orca, is having a fine time, thank you very much, hanging out in the ocean with his family. When a group of whale hunters capture him and sell him to a marine park, Willy cops an attitude and turns mean. Wouldn’t you? At the same time, street punk Jesse makes a meager living stealing and begging on the street. When Jessie vandalizes the marine park, spray-painting Willy’s tank, he’s forced to make amends by coming back and cleaning up his mess.
In the meantime, Glen and Annie Greenwood take Jesse in as a foster child, but Jesse would rather spend more time at the park, where’s he’s started to develop a bond with Willy. Marine biologist Rae Lindley sees this, and hires the boy to be Willy’s trainer. Both Jesse and Willy start to turn their attitudes around. When Jesse overhears the ruthless park owner, Dial, plot to kill the whale for insurance money, Jesse decides it’s time to break the rules again in order to free Willy.
The film was beautifully shot and the storyline was heartwarming, appealing to both kids and their parents. It became one of the most successful films during the summer it was released, up against blockbusters Jurassic Park and The Fugitive. It led to two feature sequels and a cartoon series.
