Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home picks up two years after the original movie. Jesse had found happiness and a new home with foster parents Glen and Annie Greenwood, and Willy was free in the ocean with other killer whales. The movie franchise had garnered about $75 million in U.S. box-office receipts, plus international and videocassette sales, so all was looking good for the Free Willy family.
Jesse learns that his biological mother has died, leaving him in charge of a little brother he never knew he had. Elvis, the brother, is as rebellious as Jesse used to be. They go on a sailing trip together, and Jesse is reunited with his old friend Willy, but the orca has run into some new problems. A huge oil tanker has crashed into an ecologically sensitive area, spilling gallons of oil, and threatening the whales’ marine habitat. When evil tycoon Wilcox gets involved, Jesse’s family and his new love interest, Nadine, are also put in danger. The boy and the whale work together again to save the day.
In this sequel, Willy’s part was replaced by animatronic whales, miniatures and other special effects. The human actors reprised their parts from the first film. The closing credits included another Michael Jackson-penned theme song, along with a toll-free number that was dedicated to freeing the original Willy from captivity, an orca named Keiko. That whale was eventually returned to the open seas.
