The third installment of the Free Willy series featured Jason James Richter returning as a seventeen year old Jesse, and August Schellengerg reprising his role as Jesse's older Native American friend Randolph Johnson. They work together on an oceanographic research vessel on an expedition helmed by Drew, a marine biologist. They find old buddy Willy in the water off the northwest U.S. coast. The killer whale is about to be a daddy, along with his new mate, Nicky, but the orcas are being threatened by illegal whale hunters.

 

Jesse gets onto the whaler’s boat and becomes friends with ten year old Max, the son of whaler John Wesley. Jesse convinces the tough kid that whales shouldn’t be killed, and Max has to convince his father before the whales are slaughtered.

 

Free Willy 3 continued the ecological themes of the first two movies, but couldn’t repeat their success. The film was the last in the series, and Free Willy went out to sea.
