Release History:
1962 - Gay Purr-ee
Warner Brother and UPA’s 1962 animated feature, Gay Purr-ee, featured an all-star voice cast. Judy Garland, Robert Goulet, Red Buttons, Mel Blanc and Paul Frees, were united with Wizard of Oz songwriters E.Y. "Yip" Harburg and Harold Arlen, for a French-influenced musical adventure.
Pretty kitty Mewsette is bored with her life in the French countryside, and runs away to Paris. Unfortunately, her back country ways leave her unprepared for the dangers of the city, and she’s kidnapped by the evil Meowrice so that she can be shipped off to America to be forcibly married to a fat cat over there. But dashing country cat Jaune-Tom and his comic sidekick Robespierre hear about the plot and come to her rescue.
Chuck Jones, the animation legend, supervised the film, as well as co-wrote it with wife Dorothy and Ralph Wright. It was directed by Abe Levitow, of Mr. Magoo fame. As with other UPA animations, the film features trippy visuals and Impressionist-inspired backdrops. This full-length movie didn’t see the kind of success that UPA had enjoyed with their short films however, and this was their only feature.
