Chock full of cool battles with Ray Harryhausen’s “Dynamation” monsters, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad was a 1970’s throwback to the swashbuckling adventures movies of the 30’s and 50’s.

Sinbad’s voyage starts when one of his sailors shoots down a bat-winged homunculi, and the creature drops a gold medallion onto the deck. Sinbad puts the medallion on, and starts having dreams about a villain in a black robe and a woman with a tattoo of an eye on her palm.

When Sinbad and his crew land in Marabia, he finds the man in black, who turns out to be an evil wizard named Koura (played by Tom Baker, who would go on to play Dr. Who). Koura demands the return of his medallion, but Sinbad escapes into the city, and meets a Vizier who holds a second gold medallion, which interlocks with his own. They embark on a journey to find the third and final piece, and wind up finding a mysterious slave girl with the eye tattoo on her palm.

This is, at it’s heart, an action movie, and the dramatic fight sequences have Sinbad battling one-eyed centaurs, a flying griffin, and the infamous scene of the six-armed statue of Kali, each arm holding a sword. Audiences were thrilled, and the successful movie was followed up by the last Sinbad movie from Charles H. Schneer and Ray Harryhausen, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, in 1977.
