A moderate hit from the 1980’s, The Goonies inspired a cult-like fanbase that made it into a seminal film for people who were kids in that decade.
The Goonies were a group of friends who lived in a small town by the sea. They were the wisecracking Mouth, the James Bond fan Data, the boy-next-door Mikey, as well as Mikey’s older brother Brandon and their friend Chunk. When greedy developers plan to turn Mikey’s house into a golf course, the kids know they have to do something to keep their gang together. They find a treasure map in Mikey’s attic, and realize that’s the only way they can save their homes. Joined by Brandon’s girlfriend Andy and her friend Stef, the kids go in search of the treasure.
The search takes the Goonies into a series of underground caves that contain hidden puzzles and booby (or booty) traps. Meanwhile, criminal matron Mama Fratelli and her convict kids Jake and Francis are on their tail. But another of Mama Fratelli’s sons, Sloth, an outcast a physical deformity but a big heart, helps the gang out. But they have a lot of obstacles to overcome before they can get the treasure and save their homes from demolition.
The film struck a chord with kids, mostly due to the top notch talent behind it. The movie was directed by Richard (Lethal Weapon) Donner, written by Chris (Home Alone) Columbus, and Steven Spielberg wrote the original story.
