Based on Basil of Baker Street, the children’s book by Eve Titus, The Great Mouse Detective told the story of the little mouse who lived beneath the floors of Sherlock Holmes’ house on Baker Street. Basil was another talented detective, and with the help of his trusty assistant Dawson, Basil was a mystery-solving powerhouse.

 

Flaversham, a mouse toymaker, is kidnapped by Fidget, a peg-legged bat who works for the evil mouse Ratigan. Ratigan demands that Flaversham create a mechanical copy of the ruler of the rodent world, Queen Moustria. When the toymakers daughter, Olivia, discovers what’s happened, she tells Basil and Dawson, and the hunt begins. The detective finds Ratigan’s hideout, all the while escaping from dangerous traps, sneaky criminals, and mean cats, to end up in an exciting scene inside the gearworks in Big Ben’s clock.

 

Disney used newly developed computer animation techniques to shoot the Big Ben sequence and its intricate backdrops, a technology that would greatly influence future Disney films, and animation in general. Animators could now have the freedom to create complicated scenes with minimal cost. The look of the film, combined with the sweet and exciting story, made The Great Mouse Detective another Disney success.
