Release History:
1962 - In Search of the Castaways
What started out as Les Enfants du Captaine, a novel by famed author, Jules Verne, went through the Disney creative machine and popped out as In Search of the Castaways – a film about a worldwide nautical search for a captain lost at sea.
The first sign that the missing captain is still alive arrives in the form of (you guessed it) a message in a bottle. When the message is retrieved by Professor Jacques Paganel (played inimitably by French actor, Maurice Chevalier,) he enlists the help of the captain’s two children, Mary and Robert Grant – who accompany him on the adventure of a lifetime.
While scouring every corner of the globe for the missing Captain Grant, the trio, along with the ship owner and his son run into just about every danger imaginable. Storms, earthquakes and avalanches paired with jaguars, giant condors, crocodiles all serve to keep the crew on their toes. And if that weren’t enough, throw in some cannibals and a crew mutiny in for good measure. The perilous journey leads the brave rescuers through the waters of Australia, New Zealand and South America, following nothing more than a piece of a map and their own sense of love and moral duty.
In Search of the Castaways didn’t prove to be as big a success as the previous Verne novel Disney had brought to the big screen – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Still, it had humor, a little romance, music courtesy of famed Disney writing team, the Sherman brothers - and a whole lot of adventure, not to mention some nifty special effects. Basically, all the necessary elements for an edge of the seat, popcorn-shoveling, Saturday matinee.
