1990 - Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Taking a cue from the original film, Gremlins 2: The New Batch took pot shots at pop culture in a film that was more comedy than horror.
In this sequel, the old store owner of the shop where Gizmo the Mogwai was originally purchased (and now lives again) has died, and the store is purchased and destroyed by Daniel Clump, a greedy industrialist. Gizmo gets away, but is captured by Dr. Catheter, who runs the Splice of Life laboratory in Clump’s high-rise Manhattan office building.
Billy, Gizmo’s last owner, along with his girlfriend Kate ironically work in the same building. Billy discovers that Gizmo has been kidnapped, and that Clamp intends to dissect him. Billy gets Gizmo out of the lab, but before they can flee the building, two of the three Mogwai rules are broken – never get them wet, and never let them eat after midnight. Once again, the nasty Gremlins are on the loose.
The Gremlins are on the rampage, and mutate after drinking chemical compounds from the Splice of Life laboratory. They turn into a lusty girl Gremlin who’s interested in Clump, a spider-ish Gremlin, a bat Gremlin, and a smart Gremlin who commentates on the ensuing action in Tony Randall’s voice. Let loose in a high-tech skyscraper, the Gremlins are free to cause even more havoc and trouble.
The film was full of pop culture and movie references throughout the story – even spoofing the original Gremlins. The little evil guys were a bit less horror-inducing this time around, with a little more fun and silliness injected into their personalities, for a movie that was more about making you laugh than making you jump.
