Release History:

1992 - The Mighty Ducks
1994 - D2: The Mighty Ducks
1996 - D3: The Mighty Ducks
With the unexpected success of The Bad News Bears in the mid-70s, it was no surprise that more films would emerge featuring a group of misfit kids playing sports alongside a cranky, disinterested coach. And after exhausting all of the other major sports, it was time to apply the formula to the hockey rink in the 1992 film, The Mighty Ducks.

Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is a powerful defense attorney in Minneapolis who, after receiving a DUI, is sentenced to community service coaching a Pee Wee hockey league. What he finds is a demoralized team in complete disarray. At first, Gordon is none too pleased about the task at hand but eventually he develops a soft spot for his ragtag team and decides to turn things around for the underdogs. Soon, with a new sponsor, spiffy new uniforms and a new name, The Mighty Ducks, the team starts to win and the misfits are soon on their way to the championships.

While critics weren’t much impressed with the low-budget Disney film, it did respectfully well at the box office, taking in over $50 million in the US alone. The Mighty Ducks would spawn two sequels, a Saturday morning cartoon, and in 1993, a professional NHL hockey team of the same name, The Anaheim Mighty Ducks (owned by, you guessed it, the Disney Company.) The pros would eventually emulate the winning ways of their kiddie counterparts in 2007 and skate their way to a Stanley Cup victory.
