Release History:

1970 - Pufnstuf
Most kids of the 60s and 70s have a fond recollection of the psychedelic world of H.R. Pufnstuf, one of the many memorable Saturday morning hits from the Krofft Brothers. And when it came time to get their feet wet with a feature film, they assembled all the regular cast members that viewers had grown to know and love, along with a few surprise witches to create the 1970 film, Pufnstuf.

Young Jimmy is an English boy who owns a magical flute named Freddy. After having a rather bad day at school, the boy hops aboard a magical boat that takes him on a journey to the colorful world of Living Island. Along the way, he discovers that Witchiepoo is plotting to steal Freddie, but he and his flute friend manage to jump overboard and escape to the island.

Here, he encounters the town mayor, an easygoing green and orange dragon named H.R. Pufnstuf. The two become fast friends and Pufnstuf provides the protection that Jimmy and Freddy need from the ever-plotting Witchiepoo who is desperate to win the “Witch of the Year” award – an accolade she can only achieve by acquiring the magic flute. She gets an evil hand from cohorts Boss Witch and Witch Hazel and together they manage to snag Freddie. It’s up to Jimmy, Pufnstuf and the rest of the gang to rescue Freddie from the castle inhabited by the witches, if Jimmy has any hopes of ever returning home.

Former Oliver! star, Jack Wild, would reprise the role of Jimmy, along with Billie Hayes as the often-hilarious Witchiepoo. The role of Boss Witch was played by Martha Raye and Witch Hazel by none other than Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) from the iconic 60s singing group, The Mamas and The Pappas. Together, they created a bigger than television version of the popular kid's series without sacrificing any of the original charm of the show. Funny, colorful, psychedelic - this was 70s kids entertainment at its best. And while the film has yet to be released on DVD and is long out-of-print on video, fans can still take a magical trip of their own to Living Island, thanks to the release of the complete television series on DVD in 2004.
