Release History:

1985 - Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer
Imagine how boring and bland a black and white world would be. What would happen to all those eggs on Easter? How would cars know to stop at an intersection? And more importantly, what on earth would Cyndi Lauper do with her hair? Well, thanks to the tireless efforts of one extraordinary little girl named Rainbow Brite, such monochrome maladies need never come to fruition.

Rainbow Brite came unto this world via a collection of Hallmark greeting cards but the spectrum of her personality couldn’t be expressed by this one-dimensional medium alone. In 1984, she made her way to the television airwaves in a series of animated specials and a year later, it was time to bring her glowing personality to the big screen, in the feature film Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer.

The story finds Rainbow Brite’s palette of colors in peril, as the evil Dark Princess devises a way to steal her hues and leave the world much paler by comparison. But Rainbow isn’t alone, she has her trusty pals, the Color Kids (Red Butler, Lala Orange and Shy Violet to name a few) to return the Spectra to its rightful owner.

But that’s not all that is at stake. Murky Dismal and his cohort, Lurky have sites set on her beloved rainbow-generating belt, which they hope to acquire by helping the Dark Princess in her plot. Never to be underestimated, however, Rainbow and the gang have a secret weapon, a brave young warrior named Krys, who rides atop his trusty black steed, Onyx. The entire gang (including some furry little sprites) are soon waging battle against all that seek to eliminate color, led by Rainbow and Starlight, “the most magnificent horse in the Universe”

Thanks to the success of this inexpensively produced feature film, Hallmark was able to green light the Rainbow Brite cartoon series on television as well as a popular toy line - all of which ensured that pigment would never be a thing of the past and tint would see tomorrow.
