Release History:
1992 - Rock-A-Doodle
The rooster is named Chanticleer, an early-riser who has convinced himself and others that it is his crow that causes the sun to rise. But one morning, when he is distracted by a barnyard ruckus, the sun just so happens to rise anyway. Embarrassed and humiliated, Chanticleer packs up and leaves the farm for the big city, only to leave the farm perpetually dark and stormy without his morning crow.
Although the barnyard animals realize they were a bit hard on the big guy and they would like him to return, the owl contingent, led by Grand Duke, rather prefer the darkness. Cut away to live-action and we meet Edmond, a boy whose farm is experiencing severe flooding. Familiar with the story of Chanticleer, the boy sets out to return the rooster to his rightful place. Before he can achieve this, however, he is turned into a little white kitten by the Grand Duke, who wants to slow the boy from reaching his goal.
The feline ends up rendezvousing with a group of farm animals – a dog named Patou, a magpie named Snipes and a mouse named Peepers – and together they head into the big city to find Chanticleer. Little do they realize that he is no ordinary rooster anymore; he is The King now – a star of the rockabilly world, having found fame and fortune, not to mention bodyguards, groupies, and his very own manager, Pinky. The gang is going to have to bring King Rooster back down to earth if they ever want to see the sun rise over the farm again.
While Rock-a-Doodle didn’t quite reach the heights of Bluth’s earlier works, he still managed to create a fun film that the kiddies could rock to. And a stellar cast of voice talent didn’t hurt either. Glen Campbell lent his voice to Chanticleer, and Christopher Plummer, Sandy Duncan, Phil Harris, Sorrell Booke and Charles Nelson Reilly brought the supporting characters to life.
