Glen Campbell...guitar, vocals
Born in Delight, Arkansas, Glen Campbell’s iconic croon was a staple on radio in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. He was one of twelve children, and when he was four his dad bought him a guitar from a Sears-Roebuck catalog. Only ten years later, he packed up and left home to play his guitar for a living, ending up in a Western swing band led by his uncle, Dick Bills.
Then, ten years after that, at age 24, Campbell moved to Los Angeles to make a name for himself as a session guitarist. He worked for some of the greatest names in music – Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, The Monkees and The Mamas and the Papas. He also toured with The Champs, the band who’s 1958 single “Tequila” was a huge hit. The later toured with The Beach Boys during Brian Wilson’s hiatus from the road. His guitar work is featured on many of The Beach Boys hit songs.
In 1961 Campbell appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, and released a couple of singles. But is wasn’t until 1967 that he had his first breakthrough hit. Positioned as a country artist by his new label, Capitol, the single was “Gentle on My Mind” – a successful but odd choice, as the song didn’t have a chorus, and was more folky than country. His follow up single, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” was another hit.
He starred in his own television show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, from 1968 – 72. He made his movie debut opposite John Wayne in True Grit, as well as singing the title song. His hit singles just kept on coming –“ Wichita Lineman," "Galveston" and the ubiquitous "Rhinestone Cowboy".
In 1992, Campbell appeared regularly at the Grand Palace in Branson, Missouri, as did many country music veterans. He later build his own venue in Branson – the Glen Campbell Goodtime Theater – where he performed for many years. It was a career that spanned decades, and included millions of album sales, countless TV appearances, two feature films, his own television show, and an album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
