CATCH PHRASE:
“It's driving me out of my mind
That's why it's hard for me to find
Can't get it outta my head
Miss her, kiss her, love her,
(wrong move you're dead)
………That girl is poison!” -- “Poison”
After popping out #1 hits like “Cool It Now” and “Candy Girl” with New Edition, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe got it together after the departure of Bobby Brown, and became Bell Biv DeVoe. The sound wasn’t like anything we’d heard from New Edition: it was funky, sexy and had a harder hip-hop edge – a culmination of the New Jack Swing sound heard in R&B in the late 80s and early 90s.
Bell Biv DeVoe’s debut album Poison sold over three million copies, and a remix album. The catchy title track from Poison went to #3 on the R&B charts, and got us all to “never trust a big butt and a smile.” Other singles from their debut included “Do Me,” and “Dope!”
After taking some time off, Bivins went on to discover and produce debut albums for Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men. In 1993, Bell Biv Devoe released a 2nd effort, Hootie Mack, followed shortly by the reunion of New Edition, producing an album on P. Diddy’s (or Puff Daddy… Sean Combs… whatever…) Bad Boy Records label.
In 2001, Bell Biv DeVoe released a third album, B.B.D., in which they explored a more hardcore rap and R&B sound. We have yet to find out if anything else will be coming our way, though it’s certain to spur excitement with their continued fans if it does.
