CATCH PHRASE:
“Come on-a my house, my house
I'm gonna give you everything…” – “Come On A My House”
Though younger generations probably think of her as George Clooney’s aunt, older generations remember her rich, deep and smooth voice that was one of America’s top pop and jazz singers. She was even named as one of six preeminent singers by Time magazine for her recordings and performances. This American icon of female vocals started off life in the small town of Maysville, Kentucky. For most of her impoverished youth, she lived with her grandfather. At the suggestion of her sister Betty, the two auditioned for a solid radio job. Soon, the two were singing with Tony Pastor’s band and recording for Columbia Records. She stayed with Tony Pastor until 1949 when her solo career started to take off. In 1951, her recording of “Come On-a My House” became a hit, launching Rosemary into the big-time.
In 1954, she starred alongside her good friend Bing Crosby, as well as Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen in the film White Christmas. As the years would go by, Clooney would appear with Crosby on television shows, like the 1957 TV special, The Edsel Show. They even went on a concert tour of Ireland together. In 1956, she started in her own half-hour musical variety show, The Rosemary Clooney Show. The next year it moved into primetime on NBC, and got a name change, The Lux Show starring Rosemary Clooney. Sadly for her fans, the show only lasted one season.
In 1958 she left Columbia records and started working for MGM, as well as Coral Records. By the end of the year, she signed with RCA, where she would stay until 1963. Throughout the years, she would continue recording for various record companies, continuing until she passed away in 2002, which is truly unique, as most singers of her generation had long since stopped recorded on a regular basis. As older generations remember, and newer generations discover her career of hits in radio, television and film, Rosemary Clooney will be fondly remembered for her immense talent and impact on pop culture.
