Whether you were starting kindergarten or senior year, the first day almost always carried the excitement and newness of the school year ahead. After all, you’d be getting to meet new people and see old friends again after the cruel, cruel summer (leaving you there on your own).
Many of us can remember the nervous anticipation of walking into kindergarten for the first time. Were the other kids going to be nice? Who would you sit next to? Was he going to smell? (Oh, the pain of personal experience prevents us from delving into that matter further.) Then there were the desks… and the play area… mats for ‘naptime.’ If that wasn’t enough, there was Play-Doh and clay, finger paints and crayons! Maybe school wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
Of course, things were pretty easy until we hit middle school. For older kids, new questions arose in the week before school started. What will you wear? Whether you wanted your cardigan sweaters in the 50s, a pullover in the 60s, hip-huggers and bellbottoms in the 70s, K-Swiss shoes and HyperColor shirt in the 80s, flannels and babydolls in the 90s… and whatever it is kids wear now-a-days… you had to look good. It’s a new year… a fresh start. Did you bring your Pee Chee Folder? Your Trapper Keeper? Your wire-bound notebook?
After meeting in the auditorium, students scattered off to find their new lockers (trying their best to learn the combinations.) As we walked (or in some cases, ran) through the hallways, marching from class to class, brushing shoulders, waving at friends, we were filled with anticipation--or dread-- of another year hitting the books. (How many days 'til we can play hooky?)
