Blackboards

I always loved blackboards! I loved the sound chalk made when writing on the board. My grade 3 teacher had a special soft cloth that she used to clean the chalkboard... I think it was a chamois, but she pronounced it "shammy". I loved the "shammy" and was overjoyed when she asked me to clean the board... but I made the mistake of burying my nose in the soft shammy... My face was covered with chalk and the dust made me sneeze. How embarrassing! I didn't mind beign called up to the board because I was fast and good at math and spelling. I hated how my printing always seemed to slant on the blackboard, though. Sometimes we were allowed to draw on the chalkboard when we were kept inside during bad weather, or during a holiday party. Sometimes the teacher would write your name on the board if you were bad... sometimes this implied detention, but sometimes it was just supposed to be punishment in and of itself to have your name on the board... hmmm...

I always had 1 or 2 chalkboards at home. My grandma was a teacher, and she gave me a big chalkboard with lots of chalk (white and colored). I noticed that the special "teacher chalk" seemed to write better than the other chalk you could get at the toy store.
