It might have come out almost a decade after the iconic Easy Bake Oven, but it looked as if it were a century older. Fashioned after an antique stove, the Holly Hobbie Oven gave little ones a chance to bake cookies and cakes just like mom ... or maybe grandma, to be more exact.

Many are familiar with the illustrated little girl named Holly Hobbie, whose face has adorned countless greeting cards for over a half-century. Few may be aware that she was created by an artist and author named Holly Hobbie (yes, that is her real name) who also wrote the popular book series based on the characters “Toot and Puddle”. In the 70s, she licensed her drawings of little fictitious Holly to American Greetings for use on their cards and soon after, a number of toys were introduced based on the same character. One of which was the Holly Hobbie Oven, which was made by Coleco. Quite similar to 1963’s Kenner Easy Bake over, it had a hard time carving out its own niche.  Holly may have had the face recognition but Kenner had the reputation and the quaint little antique oven would only last a short time and eventually fold under the pressure of the competition.

But for the brief time it lasted, it remained a popular request on the Christmas lists of little girls everywhere, who wanted some kitchen time, just like mom (or grandma) but, more importantly, wanted to churn out a steady supply of fresh-baked treats, just like their trusted friend, Holly Hobbie. Because everyone knows that a cake straight out of an old cast iron oven is sure to taste a lot better than one that is baked in one of those newfangled contraptions.
