Sometimes, all it takes is just one good friend to make it through this crazy world. And should human companionship be in scarce supply, the doll world has always stood in the wings, ready to fill the void in a lonely little girl’s life. Little boys, on the other hand, often had to fend for themselves, that is, until Playskool Toys took notice in 1985 and introduced My Buddy, a male pal that proved surprisingly successful. Realizing the marketable appeal of the plastic tyke, Playskool soon followed with Kid Sister, the female version of Buddy.
Standing at 20” tall, Kid Sister, and her brother, Buddy were surprisingly gimmick free, in a world where dolls generally accompanied a plethora of accessories available for purchase. There were no racks of wardrobe choices - only a few outfits, hair colors and shoes to provide some variety. But it mattered little, for these dolls weren’t interested in being runway models, they just wanted to be your cuddly, huggable friend.
Of course, every family has its black sheep and these dolls were no exception. Little was ever mentioned about their evil cousin who you might know as Chucky. Modeled after these gentle and cherubic playmates, Chucky wasn’t quite as loveable as the rest of his kin and his murderous ways were extensively chronicled in the Child’s Play series of horror movies. Still, one bad apple didn’t manage to spoil the image of My Buddy and Kid Sister. After a successful run in the 80s, they were re-released in the next decade, although this time with non-removable clothing.
Thanks to Kid Sister, many a little girl survived the loneliness of childhood - ready to take on the world’s challenges, but always mindful that they owed a debt of gratitude to a little cuddly doll who stood by them through thick and thin and gave them the companionship necessary to emerge unscathed. Thanks, Kid Sister, you were the best friend a girl could ever have.
