Sometimes, the consequences of discontinuing a toy can have long-felt and unforeseen ramifications. Take the Get in Shape Girl home fitness set for example. Remove it from store shelves and watch the kids start putting on the pounds. OK, so maybe processed junk food and soda are a bit more culpable but hey, you can either be part of the problem of part of the solution and at least this product got plenty of little girls off the couch and raising their pulse rate, right along with mommy.
While Jane Fonda was getting all those moms to sweat to a videotape in the 80s, Hasbro Toys wanted to make sure that the little girls didn’t feel left out. In all of its striking pink glory, the Get in Shape Girl workout set was introduced. Throw on a tracksuit and some legwarmers and you were ready for action Everything else was included, such as child-sized dumbbells, a jump rope, gymnastic ribbons, and even a water bottle and wristbands. Just pop in one of the handy cassette tapes (if you don’t know what those are, ask your parents) and you were led through a mild workout routine.
Sure, It might not put you on the road to Olympic competition but the Get in Shape Girl set was at least a step in the right direction towards healthy exercise habits. It was so much fun, you didn’t even realize you were supposed to despise working out.
Hey Hasbro, bring back the Get in Shape Girl and make a blue set for the boys while you are at it. Your nation is calling.
