The title says it all: what it is, are there stars in it (yes, superstars even!) and where and when you could find it. The series consisted of hour-long animated movies shown on ABC’s Saturday morning slot from 1972 to 1973.

Several production companies provided material for the series, including Hanna-Barbera (what would our childhoods be without them?), Rankin/Bass and Filmation. The short movies were mostly failed pilot episodes for cartoon series that never materialized, often animated versions of popular primetime shows. Among the repertoire were Lost In Space, Nanny & the Professor and The Mini Munsters. Other installments would eventually become regular series, like The Brady Kids and Lassie’s Rescue Rangers. Another notable episode was the Rankin/Bass Willie Mays and the Say-Hey Kid, in which the baseball great voiced his own character.

A few of the movies featured familiar characters in new situations or bizarre crossovers. Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family depicted the Stephens children from Bewitched as teenagers who used their magical powers to help circus performers. In That Girl in Wonderland, an animated likeness of That Girl’s titular character imagines herself having fairy tale adventures inspired by Alice, Cinderella and Goldilocks.

The series didn’t last long and very few, if any, of the featured titles ever became available in VHS or DVD format. It’s unfortunate because it was the first anthology comprised of original animated works and certainly a landmark production.
