Try to create a Saturday morning cartoon based on a controversial adult show like All in the Family and you are treading on dangerous ground. Still, in 1972, it seemed like a good idea and a canine counterpart was created called The Barkleys.

The head of the household was Arnie Barkley, a bus driver unafraid of unleashing his unpopular opinions on his wife Agnes and their children – teens Terry and Rodger, and the younger pup, Chester – and his hapless neighbor, Beagle. Although toned down considerably from its real-life inspiration, The Barkleys still touched on plenty of surprisingly controversial issues that today might seem surprising for a kids show - topics such as the feminist movement.

As a result, The Barkleys found itself being not really suited for kids, or adults, and after one season, the canine clan would disappear from the airwaves without so much as a whimper - and teaching the valuable lesson that not all prime time shows are suited for Saturday morning.
