From the moment I Dream of Jeannie debuted in 1965, audiences fell in love with the eager-to-please servant, who had washed ashore in a bottle that was discovered by astronaut Tony Nelson. After five years of memorable adventures together in prime time, Jeannie and her master have enjoyed remarkable longevity in syndication. And like so many memorable television characters, it was only a matter of time before Jeannie would show up on the Saturday morning lineup in Jeannie.

The 1973 animated series, produced by Hanna-Barbera departed significantly from the original premise of the television series. This time around, Jeannie’s master was young surfer, Corry Anders (who sounded remarkably like future Jedi Luke Skywalker, since his voice was provided by a young Mark Hamill.) Corry finds Jeannie bottled up at the beach and frees his hot new indentured servant. But Jeannie isn’t traveling alone these days. She now has a bumbling sidekick genie named Babu (voiced by one-time Three Stooges member, Joe Besser.)

Babu was well intentioned but didn’t really have much control over his magic, which he unleashed with a wave of the hands and a hearty “Yapple Dapple!” And while he might test the patience of any mere mortal, the always-helpful Jeannie took his missteps in stride, exclaiming “Oh Babu!” before happily undoing the damage with a propeller-like twist of her ponytail (an apparent innovation on the familiar head nod she employed in the series.) Jeannie and Babu had a trusted friend in Henry, one of Corry’s high school chums, who knew of their magical abilities but kept their secret safe. Also appearing regularly was Corry’s mom, Mrs. Anders, who seemed completely oblivious to the fact that her son had scored a gorgeous and magical adult bombshell that granted his every wish.

Jeannie lasted for two seasons, although the second was comprised strictly of reruns. Her and Babu would later appear together on an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies and Babu would later branch out with a solo career as Scooby’s teammate on Scooby’s All-Star Laugh-A-Lympics in 1977
