The Oddball Couple was a DePatie-Freleng Enterprises animated homage to Neil Simon's popular and successful franchise The Odd Couple. You may remember the play, the movie and the television show about Oscar and Felix, two friends with opposite personalities that share an apartment. In the cartoon, a dog named Fleabag and a cat named Spiffy cohabitated and the result was hilarious wackiness.

Fleabag was the animal equivalent of Oscar--lazy, slovenly and lacking in social graces. Spiffy was patterned after Felix's clean, polite and fastidious character. The two of them fought like cats and dogs, literally, or they would have if Spiffy wanted to get his fur mussed. He usually didn't. Fleabag and Spiffy's home reflected their oddball friendship: half of their house looked like a mansion while the other half was a run-down shack. That dichotomy extended to their car and it wasn't hard to guess which half belonged to which roommate. Dog and cat worked together as reporters, sharing an office and a secretary named Goldie.

The show debuted right after the TV sitcom's cancellation and ran on ABC's Saturday morning lineup for two years. The network wasn't too enthused with the cartoon's ratings though and canceled it in 1977, leaving the audience to wonder if Fleabag ever picked up his dirty socks.
