The Tonka toy line of Pound Puppies inspired a TV special and subsequent TV series in the late 1980s. The plush toys had become incredibly popular in the U.S. and abroad and the animated series was received with equal enthusiasm. The main puppies were Cooler, Howler, Bright Eyes, Whopper and Nose Marie and they banded together to provide orphan puppies to good, loving homes. The quintet lived on the grounds of a mansion owned by Millicent Trueblood, who was rich and kind, two very desirable qualities. The puppies staffed a top-notch underground facility, complete with a computer to aid them in their mission.
Cooler and the gang had to dodge and outwit several meanies, including Millicent's evil niece Katrina Stoneheart and her nasty feline companion, Catgut (a singularly creepy name for a cat, in our opinion). The Pound Puppies always prevailed and found a way to continue their commendable work.
