The original Scooby-Doo gang was de-aged for the new show, into junior high kids but they still ran around solving spooky mysteries. In addition, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo took on the conventions of the original cartoon and spoofed them mercilessly. The whole tone of the series became more humorous, more oddball and more caroon-y, if that's possible.
Freddie was a young, excitable boy, given to dramatic declarations; Velma was serious and intelligent, toting a briefcase that turned into a computer or a phone or lab paraphernalia; Daphne was vain and haughty, often calling on her butler, Jenkins, for help; and Shaggy, the jewel of the gang, was constantly hungry and sometimes scared. Velma was usually the one who solved the mystery with the aid of her computer, but Freddie would jump to conclusions early on and blame the local bully, Red Herring, of committing the crime. Freddie was wrong most of the time and Red would be vindicated.
The cartoon featured a slew of running gags and in-jokes, like Velma's "Jinkies!" exclamation to the villain's woeful "I would have gotten away with it..." speech that ended every episode. A Pup Named Scooby-Doo aired for three years on ABC, though it wasn't the last of the franchise: in 2002, the canine detective returned in yet another series, What's New, Scooby-Doo?
