I got a weird complexion and I, I wanna scream!"
Back in 1957, filmgoers got their first glimpse of a teenage werewolf and it wasn’t pretty. Luckily, Michael J. Fox changed the perception in 1985, when he starred as a more happy-go-lucky version, his monstrous ways tempered by a dose of good-natured humor. It was this kinder, gentler werewolf that made its way to the Saturday morning airwaves in the animated version of Teen Wolf.
Debuting in 1986, Teen Wolf revisited the story of Scott Howard and his family, all of them with the ability to transform into werewolves. Living in the town of Wolverton, a popular tourist destination thanks to the numerous werewolf sightings in the area, Scott does his best to keep his affliction a secret (unlike the movie, where the character became rather proud of his werewolf ways.) Other members of his family included his father Harold, his immigrant grandparents (from Transylvania, of course) and little sister, Lupe. Living next door to the family is the ever-snooping Mrs. Seslik and her geeky son Waldo, who is always on the verge of discovering the Howard family secret.
Scott’s best friend is Stiles, who is well aware of Scott’s secret, and just a tad jealous. Another friend is Boof, a teen girl who is also in on the secret and has a crush on Scott. Much to her disappointment, he is far more interested in one of the popular girls at school, a cheerleader named Pam who is unfortunately dating his nemesis, a teen named Nick who would like to see Scott remain an outsider. His antics frequently anger Scott to the point that he reluctantly transforms into his hairy alter ego.
June Foray, best known for lending her voice to Rocket J. Squirrel on Rocky and Bullwinkle, provided the voice of both Grandma Howard and the nosy Mrs Seslik. Happy Days co-star, Donnie Most (Ralph Malph) lent his voice to Stiles.
Teen Wolf managed to last for three seasons and the main character and premise were later liberally borrowed from for the live-action prime-time series Big Wolf On Campus in 1999.
