Captain N: The Game Master combined a Saturday morning cartoon with all your favorite Nintendo game characters. In this series, a young boy named Kevin is pulled into his TV to become Captain N, a video game superhero. He and his dog, Duke, join his cohorts Mega Man, Princess Lana, Simon Belmont, and Kid Icarus for Nintendo-fueled adventures in Videoland. They have to fight the evil Mother Brain (from Nintendo’s Metroid.) Captain N could use his video game control pad to change the plot and pause the characters, just like he could in a real video game.
Mario and Luigi, the stars of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show (and, of course, the popular Super Mario Bros. video game series), were added to the show in the fall of 1990. The show was renamed Captain N and the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and featured a new segment where the Mario Bros. come to the rescue of Princess Toadstool, while fighting King Koopa and his seven children.
A year later, the series was retitled Captain N and the New Super Mario World to take advantage of Nintendo’s newest Mario Bros. game. NBC aired it for a year before dropping most of its animated programming slate. The show was renamed again, this time, Captain N and the Video Game Masters. Moved to syndication, Mario and Luigi were off the show, and old and new episodes were mixed together.
