Cartoons got a dose of environmental power with the debut of Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Developed by media mogul Ted Turner, and produced by DIC, this superhero-style program aired on Turner’s TBS Superstation Network on cable and in wide syndication in 1990.
The show told the story of earth spirit Gaia, who needed to rescue the planet from evil polluters. She worked with five kids, each representing a different continent – Kwame, from Africa, had the power of “Earth,” Wheeler, from North America, had “Fire,” Gi, from Asia, had control over “Water,” Linka, from the Soviet Union (also a part of Asia, but who’s counting?) held “Wind,” and Ma-Ti, from South America, had the power of “Heart.” They, along with their monkey sidekick, Sushi, fought villains with names such as Hoggish Greedly, Looten Plunder, Dr. Blight, and Verminous Skumm.
Each Planeteer had a special ring that held their powers, given to them by Gaia. When the rings came together, the kids could call on Captain Planet, the earth’s most powerful defender. Sporting blue skin and pollution-foiling super powers, Captain Planet nevertheless told kids that “The Power Is Yours!” and gave them lessons at the end of each episode on different ways they could help the planet themselves by recycling, eating a vegetarian diet, and other tips.
The association with Ted Turner helped the show attract star talent. Character voices were provided by celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Ed Asner, Sting, Elizabeth Taylor, and many others, all working for the lowest wage the actor’s guild would allow. The formula was a success, and the show became one of the most popular cartoons of the early 90’s.
Hanna-Barbera took over the show after three seasons, renaming it The New Adventures of Captain Planet. They added a new theme song (the Captain was now referred to as "The Mega Mack Daddy of Ecology.") They continued creating new episodes until 1995, when they moved all the reruns to the Cartoon Network, also owned by Turner.
