UK-based creators Gerry and Sylvia Anderson developed what they called "Supermarionation," a process that proved successful with their series, The Thunderbirds, and again with Captain Scarlet. It consisted of filming plastic puppets operated by fine, almost invisible wires. Using electronics, the puppets could blink and move their eyes sideways, and their lips could move in sync with the soundtrack. To make them look even more real (or more creepy), photographs of actual eyes were attached to the puppets’ faces.
In this series, the Spectrum is the crew of a friendly Earth spaceship, who are mistakenly accused by the Martians of trying to invade their planet. An interstellar war commences and the Mysterons, the energy beings who live on Mars, vow revenge on Spectrum. They attempt to kill Captains Scarlet and Black, the top Spectrum agents, and bring them back to life as Mysteron soldiers. They succeed with Black, who becomes Scarlet’s nemesis.
Other Spectrum agents work with Scarlet to fight Black and the Mysterons – Commander-in-Chief, Col. White, Scarlet’s partner Captain Blue, head of security Captain Grey, World Government Police Corp. officer Captian Ochre, and Irish Captain Magenta, who basically worked as the comic relief. They were joined by five female agent/pilots, known as the Angels. Their names were Melody, Harmony, Rhapsody, Symphony and Destiny.
One of the last Anderson shows to broadcast in the US., Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons aired on syndication around the country.
