In this short-lived medieval-themed cartoon Dirk the Daring, a medieval knight, battled his arch-nemesis Singe, among others, to save his beloved Princess Daphne.   Each episode of Dragon’s Lair featured Singe devising new ways to wreak havoc on the kingdom of King Ethelred. Dirk and his white steed Bertram would often have to go to the dreaded “Dragon’s Lair” and despite his rather clumsy nature, Dirk the Daring would prevail, saving the princess and vanquishing his foes time and time again.

Dragon’s Lair was based on the groundbreaking and popular laser disc game of the same name.  90% cartoon and 10% video game, it seemed only natural to adapt it for the television.  In the game, players had a rather limited control over the dim-witted Dirk, playing the game like a “Choose Your Path” book on steroids rather than clicking left, right, A and B over and over to perform complicated maneuvers.  With impressive animation from former Disney animator Don Bluth, the game was an instant hit.

Episodes of the television series played out in a very similar fashion, with viewers watching the scenario and being left with a ‘choice’ to make during the commercial break.  Once they were back from break, the consequences of the various choices were shown and the show would go on with the option that didn’t kill Dirk.  Unfortunately for our reluctant hero, Dragon's Lair didn’t find the kind of lasting success and legacy of its quarter-taking predecessor, lasting just one season.
