Danger Mouse was simply "Greatest Secret Agent in the World." A combination of James Bond and Monty Python, Danger Mouse drove a flying car and lived in a mailbox. He and his suit and glasses-wearing hamster sidekick, Penfold, were a British import that landed at the fledging Nickelodeon network in 1984.

Danger Mouse’s arch-enemy was the evil toad, Baron Silas Greenback, and his pet caterpillar Nero. They were joined by Greenback’s main henchman, Stiletto, a Cockney-accented crow who wore a grey trench coat, and his companion crow, LeatherHead. In the British version, Stiletto spoke with an Italian accent. On DM’s side was his walrus-like commander, Colonel K, who would send Danger Mouse and Penfold everywhere they were needed, from outer space to the Bermuda Triangle. The show also featured master of disguise, Agent 57, and Count Duckula, a vampire duck who would go on to star in his own show.

The combination of cute animation and clever political and social satire made the program popular with both kids and adults. An offscreen narrator voice would often go off in bizarre directions as well, singing songs to enhance the action, or threatening to quit his job.

The silly plots enhanced the irreverent tone, such as the Baron threatening to destroy the world with Scottish bagpipe music, or an enzyme escaped from captivity that turned everything white. The show was endlessly entertaining, and the 89 episodes that aired from 1984 – 87 and 1991 – 94 were a big hit for Nickelodeon.
