What kid wouldn’t want to go to summer sleepover camp and have John Candy as a counselor? That’s just what you got at Camp Candy. In addition to normal camp activities like swimming, fishing, and boating, John Candy’s crazy friends would come around and visit. Plus, there was even a camp villain – Rex de Forrest, a local land developer who wanted to buy Camp Candy and use the land to build condos.
Candy developed this animated program based on his experiences as a real camp counselor. He had already become a star after appearing on the television show SCTV and in movies like Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. He was able to use this TV vehicle to teach kids the importance of ecology.
Camp Candy would also feature fellow SCTV alums Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas, who would appear as their own recognizable characters in live segments on the show. The theme song was written Harry Nilsson and sung by both Nilsson and Candy.
The show never became a huge success, but developed a small following. It’s episode, "Wish Upon a Fish," won a Humanitas award. It remains a part of the great work that John Candy produced, before dying of a heart attack in 1994.
