Created in 1951, Dennis the Menace was one of the most popular comic strips in history. Created by Hank Ketcham, and based on his son, Dennis was always meaning well, but somehow always getting into trouble. His success led to a live action TV show in 1959, and then in 1985, a cartoon version hit the small screen to draw in a whole new generation of kids.
Dennis always had a plan – and that plan usually ended up badly. With his cowlick and his perpetual ability to get into trouble, Dennis wreaked havoc on cantankerous Mr. Wilson, his next door neighbor and recipient of many of Dennis’ schemes. Dennis was joined in his mischief by his friend Joey and his dog Ruff. His on again/off again pal Margaret often came along as well, if only to show that girls could get into as much trouble as boys.
The producers used Dennis’ misadventures to show kids at home about the consequences of his actions, and Dennis would have time in each episode to talk directly to his audience about the things he had done.
The success of the show was also due to a talented voice cast, including Phil Hartman as Mr. Wilson.
After three years in syndication, CBS put the program on their network.
