After 27 years of gracing the pages of comic strips and books, the gang at Riverdale High, led by Archie Andrews, would finally get a shot at Saturday morning entertainment. The Archie Show would be the first of 9 different shows that would feature Archie and his pals, a group of teenagers that enjoyed each others company despite their radically different personalities.

Along with Archie was the wealthy object of his affection, dark-haired Veronica Lodge, a girl with looks to kill and an attitude to match. But Archie wasn’t the only one who had an eye on the affluent beauty; he would have to share a rivalry with Reggie Mantle, a teenager who somehow managed to rival Veronica in the snobbery department. But Veronica wasn’t the only person who person who had an interest in Archie, there was also her best friend, or worst enemy (depending on the day) Betty Cooper. When all of this was too much for Archie to handle, he always had his best buddy, Jughead Jones to pal around with. Jughead, a crowned lad with a voracious appetite generally didn’t want anything to do with girls and in Archie’s book, that was A-OK.

Over at Archie’s alma mater, Riverdale high, he had to contend with Mr. Weatherbee, the Principal; Miss Grundy, his homeroom teacher; Coach Kleats and other students such as Big Moose, Dilton Doily, and Big Ethel. Last but certainly not least was the school’s unofficial mascot, Hot Dog, a sheepdog that belonged to Jughead.

When the gang wasn’t at school, they could usually be found in Archie’s prized jalopy or catching some grub at Pop’s Chock’lit shop. When the entertaining bug hit them, they were belting out their own brand of bubble gum music in their musical group, The Archies (who, in actuality were a group of LA studio musicians, led by Ron Dante, and responsible for the number-one hit, “Sugar, Sugar”  in 1969.)

Various incarnations of Archie and his friends would grace Saturday morning airwaves for well over a decade, introducing new generations to the lovable clan from Riverdale High.  But it all started with The Archie Show.
