Wonderama went through many hosts during its years on the air. Some of the hosts served concurrently, some left and came back and some were never seen again. The first host was Sandy Becker who charmed the audience with little skits and puppets while his co-host, Pat Meikle, gave drawing lessons.
Becker left after a year on the show and was replaced by Herb Sheldon who ran the whole kaboodle by himself. Art, music, comedy--this guy did it all. His only helpers were two puppets, Eggbert the Bookworm and Ummley the Steam Shovel. Sheldon gave way to the next two co-hosts, Bill Britten and Doris Faye, who had the luxury of taping their shows (and save them for posterity).
The golden years of Wonderama arrived with its longest-serving host, Sonny Fox who worked solo for eight years. Fox had a knack for dealing with his young audience and they loved him in return. The program expanded to include magic trick, Shakespeare dramatizations and spelling bees, running up to four hours on Sunday mornings. The best thing about it was that the content was never boring even though it lasted so long.
Bob McAllister followed Fox's exit and he hosted the show for the next 10 years. The new host introduced different games and segment that became very popular with the kids and invited exciting celebrities to the studio for interviews.
In the late 70s, Wonderama changed entirely and was more aimed at teenagers than at younger children. McAllister left to host a network version of the show, this one called Kids Are People Too, which ran on ABC until 1982.
