Superheroes always work better when there’s family around (or so we hear), so what better way to fight crime when you can have your kids with you. In Defenders of the Earth, famous comic strip heroes from the 1930s teamed up with their offspring in the year 2015. Outer space hero Flash Gordon was joined by his son Rick, who was a scientific genius. The Phantom – the “Ghost Who Walks” from the African jungles – worked with his telekinetic daughter, Jedda. Mandrake the Magician, a powerful hypnotist, had Kshin, his adopted son from Asia with martial arts powers. Mandrake’s outrageously strong assistant Lothar, teamed up with his son Lothar, Jr. (known as L.J.) who also had super strength.
Of course, the bad guys had the same deal going on. Ming the Merciless, the intergalactic villain who sought domination of the universe was joined by his son – who, ironically enough, also sought domination of the universe.
The younger generation of heroes did their training in a holographic chamber where they learned how to fight the dangers they would have to face. They were helped by their parents, but in this cartoon world, it was the kids who saved the day. And universal domination was averted for 65 syndicated episodes.
