Captain Jim Albright was a WWII veteran who was leader of the Secret Squadron during the 1950’s Cold War. Known as Captain Midnight, he fought crime with his not-too-bright co-pilot Ichabod "Icky" Mudd. Brilliant scientist, Aristotle "Tut" Jones, gave them advanced scientific knowledge to help them. Midnight’s motto was "Justice through strength and courage," and he flew a jet plane out of his secret base to fight evil.
The program was originally an Ovaltine-sponsored radio show in the 1940’s. They continued to sponsor it when it moved to TV, and used Captain Midnight as a chocolate milk-drinking promotional tie-in. Kids could send in Ovaltine proofs-of-purchase to become members of the Secret Squadron, and they could decipher secret messages from the Captain with their decoder badges.
Ovaltine owned the name, Captain Midnight, but Screen Gems produced the show. When Screen Gems sold the program to non-network stations, they had to do so under a different name, Jet Jackson, Flying Commando. They also ended up roughly dubbing out all references to “Captain Midnight” in the script.
